    Slade-Winterland Arena

My God this band were second to none live.  Why has this stuff never been released?

Slade were considered to raucous for American audiences at the time.  Now sadly only remembered for a Xmas record.  Take a listen to this and see why they stole  the show at the Reading Festival in 1980.

Slade's entire record collection is currently being remastered and re-released by Salvo Records.  Check out the Slade Live Anthology.

    Keep on rockin!

    Re: Slade-Winterland Arena

A truly great band that disappeared way too soon!  Good to hear their old material is being re-mastered; hope to see this stuff in the shops soon!

This concert set is a bit short, but well worth a listen. If you're fortunate enough to have a copy of Slade Alive!, enjoy a listen. (Sadly, my vinyl copy expired years ago...) Their rendition of John Sebastian's Darlin' Be Home Soon was incredible!

    Re: Slade-Winterland Arena

I tried to record a concert on the radio once, later found it to be London 75.  But it was during a thunderstorm and it kept going in and out of stereo. It would have been great.  I would like to see that one here.

In the 70s Slade played Pittsburgh.  I remember reading the review in the paper.  An usher said it was the first time he saw people holding their ears!

    Re: Slade-Winterland Arena

I saw them in Waterbury, CT., around 74 or 75? I think they were headlining. Anyway, as soon as they started playing, people from the front were running to the back. Me, caught in the vortex, ran to the front, and quickly learned why others were running away. They were soooooooooooooo effing loud. Never heard a band louder since. Black Sabbath? Uh-uh. Swans? Fuhgetabowdit.

If I could download my memories to hard disk, that concert would be in the top 5. And, it would be inappropriate to talk about the remaining four in this forum. Slade Rulez.

Believe it or not Dave Hill & Don Powell are still going as Slade. Saw them just before Xmas where it all started in Bilston at the Robin 2, a town in the Industrial West Midlands close to Wolverhampton, No Noddy or Jimmy but still a foot stomping, earth shaking, rollickingly damgood night out. (see you tube)

    Re: Slade-Winterland Arena

I was at the show too. Where are all my pals from San Jose?

    What a place Winterland was!

I can't re-call who played with them that night. OMG that was long-ago, 34 years-ago today. But those were the days/nights.

    Thanks

    Re: Slade-Winterland Arena

My ex-husband was their truck driver and I accompanied him on this tour to New York, Vancouver, Detroit, Ohio, St. Louis and God knows where else.  So tiring.  I met 10 Years After and wasn't impressed.  I hate limp handshakes.  I remember them as being so skinny and fragile looking.  Slade was fun even though their manager, Chas Chandler was a *ck.  Holder was the absolute best!  Very nice guy!

    Re: Slade-Winterland Arena

I remembered Slade for the early 80's "Keep Your Hands Off My Power Supply" album. At least in the mid Missouri area, the single "My Oh My" was pretty popular. It was after this album came out that we figured out that Quiet Riot's coolest songs were Slade covers. If the back catalog is going into print, I'm there.

    Re: Slade-Winterland Arena

Winterland and Bill Graham were good to Slade. Thyy played many times:

xx Sept 1972        opened for J.Geils band
06 May 1973       Humble Pie headlined, Steeley Dan opened
20 Oct  1973       Brownsville Station & James Gang opened
25 Jan   1974       Brownsville Station opened
27 June 1974       unsure who opened this gig, may have been 10CC
      * after this tour they returned to UK and worked the remainder of 1974 on their film - Slade in Flame
xx Oct 1975         Robin Trower headlined    (this show is available on video, contact me)
16 Apr 1976       10 Yrs After headlined, Frankie Miller opened

I wish I had been able to see them in that era.  I used to belong to their UK fan club for many years and have kept a history of the band archived.  I can always use Slade concert memories and stories.  Please send to Steve

    Re: Slade-Winterland Arena

Saw them at Winterland a couple of times. Best memories were the singer's voice and mirrored top hat and then the guitar player in silver platform boots climbing up on huge speakers on the side of the stage and jamming. They definitely ROCKED the place!
