    Outtakes?

I recently downloaded the Linda Ronstadt 8-12-72 show (great show, btw). The last two songs in the download are labeled "outtake". I think of an outtake as a song that was recorded in the studio but didn't end up on the album. What does "outtake" mean in the context of a live show?

    Hi Chuck,
Outtakes as it applies to live recordings are songs that are significantly flawed by technical limitations. In the vast majority of cases, this simply means an incomplete song. Back in the analog days, time limitations on blank tape often resulted in the tape stock running out in inconvenient places. A recording might have songs that end in progress, start in progress or have a sequence missing in the middle. A technical issue with the recording itself is occasionally the reason a song becomes designated for outtake status, but it's primarily incomplete songs.

To give one the most flawless and continuous listening experience, these outtakes could have been eliminated altogether, but for the most complete listening experience, which is also important, we include them at the end as outtakes.
