Was a video made of the Winterland show, or not?

there's always been much debate in the bruce community as to about whether this was videoed. it would definitely be one of the holy grails of springsteen videos. i can't believe that bill graham WOULDN'T have shot it. my friend's sister worked with the joshua light show at the fillmore east in the late 60's and back then, many/all (?) of the shows were video taped. in addition to the winterland show, i'm hoping that there might be a video of bruce playing with steel mill in 1970 at either the matrix or the fillmore.. there's a ray of hope in there somewhere for that to exist as well. graham offered them a contract back then and they turned it down because bill didn't offer them enough money.

as to the quality of the paris dvd.... yea..it's great. but for my money the 3rd generation videos i've had since the early 80's of the '78 capitol theater shows in passiac are much more watchable. even grainy black and white bruce in 1978 will aways beat a perfectly shot dvd version of full color springsteen of 1985 in my mind. just a matter of opinion i guess.

now a perfect dvd 1978 full color springsteen from winterland...that's a horse of a whole other color....

I heard another version of this, "Prodigal Son at Winterland" I believe, and I'd have to say there are pros and cons to each version. The one here has much better fidelity, it is super-clear and a blast to listen to.

However, the older boot I have, while more lo-fi, has an additional thre songs on the encore, the full version of "Fever", and appears to play back at a slightly slower speed.

It is difficult to tell which speed is correct, but listening to both I suspect the Wolfgang's Vault version is a little faster than the actual recording. The songs seem slightly too fast and Bruce's voise a higher pitch than perhaps it should. Like I said though, this is just my suspicion, it is very hard to tell.

I was there. Still one of the best shows I've ever seen. And I've seen some of the best including Genesis at their best in the Gabriel days. I'd love to get a copy of "The Fever" from that night. Anyone know where on can be had? I've got the one off 18 tracks, but it's just not the same.

I was also at the Seattle show but I believe it was a few days later, on December 20, a mind blowing affair. When I first heard the Winterland show the other night my experience was very similar to yours and I was caught in the contorted, drooling stage by my wife. Tonight I showed her your post and she got a real kick out of it, as I myself certainly did. Thank you

Bruce is still the best..I am 50 and he rules! Listening to prove it all night was unbelieveable. it is the best song in the concert and this is saying a lot because my favorite song is Thunder Road! I wish he would tour again with the E-Street band so I can see him just one more time!

I totally forgot about the Roxy show! this was the first time I ever heard of him. I listened to the show on radio with some frat buddies. Are there any tapes or recordings made of this show?

Tonight I was checking my email and saw that Springsteen's Winterland 12/15/1978 concert is playing here.

I click on the link and it is the SF show of the Seattle show I saw a couple of days earlier. Don't know that I could rate it the Best concert I've ever seen but it would be pushing hard for #2. #1 has got to be the Cold Blood and It's a Beautiful Day show in Bohler Gym.

I've been a Springsteen fan since the first show I saw, the weekend after he was on the cover of Time and Newsweek. During this show in 1978, after almost 2 hours on stage the audience is going nuts yelling for an encore, Springsteen steps up to the mic and says "We are going to take a short break and then come back for the second set" the crowd goes wild....3 1/2 hours of Rock and Roll heaven.. after the show people were streaming out of the show onto Mercer screaming, cause if you didn't you'd explode.

TheSF Winterland show was going to be broadcast live on the local FM station. My entire day was planned around recording this show. buying tapes, cleaning the tape heads, checking the recordings, fussing with the antenna, deciding to record in stereo(too much noise) or mono. It was fantastic. I listened to those tapes hundreds of times. It has probably been 15 -20 years since I've heard them. Through the years I have lost one of the tapes and I hae not seen the other one for quite a while.

I rarely listen to music these days. The current stuff just doesn't talk to me like it used to.

As much out of curiosity to see if it still sounded as good as I remember, I follow the link to the Vault and to the Winterland show. My listening began at background volume as I am doing a research project. The first 5 tunes are fine. like and old familiar friend. the volume is creeping up a bit.

Tune 6 "Prove it All Night" long piano opening softly and building. The volume keeps getting a nudge up. Volume goes up to max. I find myself playing the air piano on my desk. the tips of my fingers are getting sore. I am no longer researching my project. I switch to drumming on the desk. My hands are getting sore. my eyes are getting moist. I go out in the hall. the searing, gutty guitar comes in over the piano. I'm drawn back in the room with an air guitar. Eyes closed . Eyes welling up, again. Dancing around the room like a white guy in heat, thumbing my belt at the hip like I was channeling primal energy. I lean back against the bifold closet doors and they slide open to nearly swallow me. My jaw has the sensation that lives between uncontrollable crying and laughing. Where you cover your face because it is so contorted you don't want anyone to see, and your about to drool.

The song ends. I'm almost grateful . I don't know if I have the energy to listen any longer or how long I could stand it.

26Years ago I was driving to work at 5:30am through Seattle listening to that same song , same volume,same sore hands beating on the steering wheel and dash, same tears,same exhaustion with the same effect.

So, what song still does it for you? What does it do? and how does it do it?

I'm still trying to figure out if the sound is better than my copy of Crystal Cat's Winterland Night. From memory, I will say yes. I'm going to do a comparison tonight when I get home from work. What does everyone else think?

My favorite boot is still Passaic Night (9/19/78). The band played like there was a gun to their heads! Roxy Night (7/7/78) & Agora Night (8/9/78) are great shows as well but to my ears, Passaic sounds the best. I have six full shows from the Darkness tour.

Let's hope for more Bruce on this site soon - such as the very 1st King Biscuit show from 1973!

This takes me back to when I saw him for the first time (just after the river came out). He was great but this concert is even better. jungleland and prove it all night are just killer!

I had a Psych final on 12/16/78, but a friend had an extra ticket for the first night at Winterland. Instead of studying I went to the show, and was not disappointed. Best Bruce show I ever saw, to this day. I actual held him when he stage dived into the audience. I also went to the 2nd show. Glad to find the show, here at the Vault. Thanks for all the great shows.

I agree. The sound is fantastic. It's also interesting to hear the DJ's comments between encores, most of which aren't on the bootleg of this show that I have. Thanks so much to the Vault for sharing this show. On a different topic, I also totally agree with your comments on BTX about Meeting Across The River - I couldn't have said it better myself. That song was the one thing that tempered my opinion of BTR as a masterpiece, and I think that's due to the trumpet, which just seems out of place. I like the song much better as solo piano.
