Personal road story re: Link Wray

Mr. Link Wray took over for Buddy Holly to complete his tour when he passed on to Rock 'n' Roll Heaven on Feb 3 1959. later on...I was the bassist in a 3-piece "Buddy Holly meets the Who" type of band that performed his instrumental song 'Rawhide' in our rock 'a' Billy set. We then had the honour and pleasure of opening for him at the El Mocombo (Toronto, Canada) in 1980. I was previously a sound man before actively playing bass and as such, Link asked me to be his stage monitor mixer for the main performance that night - after I had finished my set with my band 'Twitch'. His band was using our stage equipment and in the afternoon dress rehearsal he plugged into our guitar player's Fender Super Reverb guitar amp and turned ALL DIALS to 10 (long before “This is Spinal Tap” did). He then turned the amp toward the side of the stage (directly at me sitting at ear level by the monitor mixing board) and played ½ of a song --- then stopped. I was tottering on my chair as I was about to black out from the excessive decibel level when he looked at me and said “can ya turn my guitar up in the monitors so I can hear the dang thing”…I sadly told him that I would not be able to mix for him that night (for fear of my ears bleeding!). That must be how he got his ‘power chord’ sound – push the amp to almost distortion and pint it anywhere but near himself. I have attached a picture from that night with Link, our band's guitar player and Ronny Hawkins.

Later on in the dressing room when Ronnie Hawkins came up to chat with Link we asked Link who is hero was. He had his leather jacket zipped all night and then in answer to our question he dramatically un-zipped his jacket (as in the picture above) and said “Elvis ma' boys” (apparently he had a chance to meet and play with the Elvis himself)

--- the road is full of stories - I have many more - don't tempt me - LoL
