    Re: Concert Vault Feedback

I am listening to the great show by B.B. King from June of 1968 just posted.  The description of the show is right-on. Having seen B.B. at Winterland about 6 months prior, I can attest to the power of his game at that time of his life.  While he continues to tour today, which in itself is a testament to his love of the blues and performing to make people happy, he had not been close to what he was for about 20 years (saw him in about 1988 and he was already sitting down to play and was not able to really get going on Lucille like he once could).  It's funny that B.B. King talks of Albert King as his "brother".  I am sure this helped to build the myth that there were in fact brothers.  They are of no relation although they both grew up in the Delta area of Mississippi.  Blues lovers also know that the late, great Freddie King was also unrelated to the other two.  Anyway, it must have been quite a treat to be at Winterland that night to see these two giants side by side pumping out the blues.  A video of that would be a treat.  I see that the Zappa's Mothers of Invention headlined that evening which would make the show extra interesting to see.

I wonder if younger visitors to Wolfgang's understand the importance of the three Kings.  First, all were outstanding vocalists, each with a distinctive style.  But, it was their guitar playing that stands the test of time.  B.B. King was one of the first, if not the first, to use sustain (hold a note) as a regular part of his solos and his signature quiet passages between vocal lines have become much-copied classics.  Freddie was a powerhouse guitarist that influenced so many great ones, like Clapton, Beck, and Page.  He sense of dynamics was unsurpassed.  Then there is Albert.  The obvious copycat is SR Vaughan, but I cannot count how many others incorporated his style.  The Three Kings -- long may they reign!
