I too, remember Stevie opening strong for the Stones.  It was in '72 at their notoriusly ragged K.C. Muncipal Auditorium show.   Nothing wrong from my perspective in first row center of the balcony, though, as my girlfriend's older brother's brownies were delectable and prompted an R. Crumb face melting through the hands experience about the time Stevie finished his set by moving through all instruments on the stage for solos, then throughout the Stones, including the Midnight Rambler red spotlights bouncing off the mirrors.  Burned into the memory puts it very well.
