Robert Cray? the Blues singer? He is a
pretty kewl dude on this sort of thing. The beauty of this Vault is the
Bill Graham Philosophy. He invented the rock concert
venue/show/policies! Now a guy like Neil Young, who just released the
(available for free here) Fillmore show with Crazy Horse is certainly
objecting. But Neil has firm policies on copyright and DRM- and objects
to anything he does not get compensated for or is used without his
authorization. However, since there is no fee to listen to anything on
this site, and since it is not for download- thereby no copyright
theft- the only possible objection would be the loss of compensation
for play time as it applies on conventional radio. BUT- the big "but"
here- these shows BELONG to Bill Graham (et al) and he can share them
under these circumstances without compensating anyone.
The Vault profit side is on the shots and posters, BUT these too are
the property of BGP. What a genius Bill was. To have any inkling of
foresight to record for a "just in case/someday" scenario was
incredibly forward thinking.
Those who object to their work being played should realize that studies
actually show once people listen to an artist and learn to like their
music, they actually go and BUY MORE. Kinda like free PR.
I love Robert Cray, but he is hardly Neil Young. The exposure is especially beneficial to lesser known artists.
imho...
