    Re: Concert Vault Feedback

    Jimmy Cliff Show

Thanks for posting this.  Not sure how it became a part of the Vault as the show is from Jamaica and was not a BGP show or King biscuit to my knowledge.  I wanted to post a review but there is no link to do so on that show so here goes.

This was the night of "The Opening and Deadication of The Bob Marley Performing Arts Center" in Montego Bay.  The center turned out to be a stage at the end of a point in Montego Bay.  This was the first night of a 3 night Rock and Reggae festival.

Jimmy Cliff took the stage at approximately 2am.  Before Cliff the show opened with the Wailers and the I Threes, followed by Toots & The Maytals, The B52's (seemed out of place then also), and Gladys Knight & The Pips.  After Jimmy, The Grateful Dead played from 4:30 am until after the sunrise. The long delay between the end of Jimmy's set and The Dead was due to the need to replace the house drums with the Deads setup.  One of the highlights of the night was the Rastas next to me yelling at Phil " Play mon . . Who is this band who take so long to set up and play . . Play Mon."  To which Phil replied "What's the matter?  You 've never seen the sun rise before"

The Jimmy Cliff set was great and "Police Officer" was a favorite for me although every song was great.  I particularly enjoyed the horn section.  It was interesting to hear Jimmy playing "Police Officer" and "The Harder They Come" at a concert environment that included police security complete with sub machine guns, goat belly soup and ice cold Red stripe, and of course spliffs the size of cigars.

Other bands that performed at the festival included The English Beat, The Clash, Joe Jackson, Bobby & The Midnites, Peter Tosh and many others.  Hopefully some more recordings will surface.  Most of the acts were filmed so it would be even better if the videos came out!
