Yes, I was fortunate to have been there, moving to San Francisco and going to SF State, beginning February, 1967. Got a houseboat in Sausalito, Gate 5, 75 bucks a month. Paid 65 bucks a semester(they hadn't come up with the unit scam at that point)and, of course, headed to Haight Asbury to turn myself into one of the flower people. Started going to shows at Winterland and Fillmore and I remember coming out of many shows being handed the small and large posters of the upcoming shows.
Turning myself into a Deadhead(for life)I, of course, ran into Bill many, many times as he went around picking up trash at the shows, doing his best to turn us into responsible people by channeling him and picking up the trash ourselves.
I remember once seething with rage that Bill ahd raised the ticket price from $2.50 to $3.00 and being furious and swearing I would never go to another of his shows. I probably went back that same night!
I love the Vault! the memories come back in waves.
Bill was God and truly educated us hippies by bringing BB King, Miles Davis, King Curtis and so many others. We just wanted to see the Dead, Janis, and Quicksilver, Country Joe and of course Dylan, but Bill packaged up some great shows.
Oh, Do I miss Winterland, but, then, I really miss the beauty of the Haight in those oh too swift and long gone days. Take me back to Hippie Hill and the Fillmore!
I close my eyes and, listening to the Vault, am walking to Tracy's Donut shop and goofing off for the Gray Line Bus tours that came through the Haight! Walking down Haight, I pass shop after shop and Big Daddy Tom Donahue's voice comes out from thr freeform FM scene just developing. I see a friend and we flash each other the peace sign and disappear into Golden Gate Park on our way to Kezar Stadium to catch Dylan and the Band!
