Here's a tidbit regarding the Oct.4 1973 show at Winterland featuring Crosby,Stills,Nash and Young. The show was billed as Stephen Stills Manassas with the Sal Valentino Band as opener.
I was in the front row of the balcony (as usual) stage right and I can remember it felt like a major earthquake when Neil walked out on stage. I also remember the boys passing around a joint on stage which might explain the "ragged performance." From where I was sitting I could see Bill Graham off to the side of the stage and he was ready to blow a gasket. The boys were totally aware of Bill and they were laughing about it.What's he going to do,fire them.
I was so blown away by Manassas that I went to the show a couple nights later and I was standing right in front of the stage for the whole show. It was pretty much the same show except no Neil Young.I remember Stephen strapping on his Firebird and testing his wah-wah pedal and I yelled out Go Back Home.Stephen winked at me and sure enough.....
