i didnt get to see grin until '72 or '73 in new york.seeing any new act was always what i went to shows for. grin got a lot of airplay from the 1+1 lp and i was excited to see them.they were a 4 piece on this tour and i thought nils brother was the second vocalist but maybe i'm mistaken. but showmanship always made the shows fun and the"rock star gimmicks" were thoroughly enjoyed by me. i always looked for new ideas and grin(nils) had at least two that stuck with me. the trampoline thing was 1 which happened at the end of the show and very unexpected. never saw any other guitarist do this. i believe he continued this in his solo shows for a while. yes its a gimmick but it was entertaining and different i loved it!!
the second gimmick was nils and his brother doing some simple harmonic leads playing each others guitar. to explain further they played the frets on their own guitar but picked the lead on the others guitar. again simple to do i'm sure but entertaining and different.
video of this would be highly recommended if available.
but the highlight of grin was nils on guitar which came shining thru on the recordings and which is what caught my attention on the radio initially. and of course others came looking for nils to play with them on many occasions as his history unfolds(springsteen/neil young/ringo starr all star band).
watching concerts for me was always visual first and aural 2nd. great front men were always at the top of my lists and nils was right up there. he knew showmanship.
where will he show up next??
