My understanding is Utopia was originally a side project that Rundgren used to explore extended prog-rock jams...and their second album (1975's "Another Live") was a live album, although I can't remember if it was a single or double LP.   Todd Rundgren also did a late '70's live double album called "Back To The Bars," part of which used Utopia as his backing band.   Somewhere along the way, Utopia began doing more "pop" oriented material, and the line between "Todd" and "Utopia" songs begins to get a bit blurred.  If I remember correctly, there was some typical record company unpleasantness as well, with Utopia ending up on one label and Todd on another....
