BTW, there are microfiche archives of the San Francisco Chronicle out at San Francisco State - a quick look at the "pink section" of the Chron could probably settle some of these  mysteries.

Newspaper archives are definitely your best source for accurate information.  A quick check of some online archives revealed this show was at the Cow Palace.  Also on the bill were the Marshall Tucker Band and Charlie Daniels.  The New Year's Eve show at Winterland was Santana with Herbie Hancock, Malo and Journey.
