No one is going to quit their bitchin because they all enjoy doing it so much.

    Re: We’re Getting Closer…

Unfortunately, the arguement about mp3 vs. flac is really comparing apples to oranges. The audio fans will not compromise and grab the loss in fidelity and the mp3 fans aren't in it for the fidelity, they just want to hear the tunes. I speak from experience, most lossless fans will not buy the mp3's or even listen to them. You need to get with the program and make FLAC files available for download or you'll limit what you'll make in profit. A large portion of the fans here, myself included, are tapers and/or long time traders and are willing to pay for the audio on those reels, not a stepped on variation. As for AugustWest, I don't care how old the reels are, I don't want it furthur degraded by eliminating any of the frequencies that actually do exist. FWIW, I prefer the warmth of an old reel master anyway and a lot of folks probably agree with me. You ever listen to any of the '77 Betty's? It doesn't get much better than that. BTW, isn't this supposed to be a forum to answer questions we have? Can we get some answers from someone who matters? Will there be FLAC downloads at some point or should the fidelity conscious folks just give up? Thanks!!!

Yo, Sup, the silence is deafening, isn't it?  Almost as much as the 15 kHz haircuts on those mp3s!

Could not have said it any better!

There are several show in the archive I'd fork over some $$ for. But not for lossy files!

"Could not have said it any better! There are several show in the archive I'd fork over some $$ for. But not for lossy files!" Many, many people are willing to pay some bucks for what's being offered. I'm not sure if this site is still negotiating with artists about prices, but I've been asking, as well as many others, when lossless downloads will be ready, to no avail. The best the site has offered is that lossless will eventually be offered. It's just that questions about a possible date for these lossless downloads are apparently falling on deaf ears. No response have given. Maybe my children will be able to download lossless files. The problem is that my children won't be interested in buying them.

    Re: We’re Getting Closer…

To put my voice into this discussion (since I'm a potential purchaser of these downloads), I'm also one who will wait for lossless files before I order any of these shows.

I recognize there are plenty of people who are satisfied with the level of quality they receive from MP3 files, but I'm not one of them. I'm not a perfectionist, "Type-A personality" audiophile when it comes to concerts that are twenty, thirty years old (or older!), but I don't believe it's asking too much to use the technology we have available today to make available to us a level of quality closer to the masters than MP3.

As digitalzep insinuated, the market of people willing to purchase these shows -- let alone listen to them -- is getting older and the next generation, by and large, could care less about this music. Sad to say that, but I believe that is the truth.

I'm one of those who've said they'd prefer lossless to mp3.  I have to admit though, I've purchased two shows now (both Record Plant recordings) and the sound quality is really good.  I'll admit I'm not an audiophile (by nature, not desire mind you,) I've never been able to detect that LPs have a warmer sound than CDs, for example.  We have 700-800 LPs in our collection, a good turntable (Linn Basik) and good speakers, so it isn't for lack of opportunity to hear said difference.  What I would really be interested in is if one of the "lossless or nothing" folks would purchase one show and give it an unbiased  listen.  I'm not saying "try it, you'll like it," rather, I'd appreciate an honest opinion of the sound quality of  the Vault's 256Kbps mp3 files from someone who has such strong feelings regarding lossless vs. mp3.

    Re: We’re Getting Closer…

so what does Jorma think now?

    Is he still pissed off?

    How about the Allmans?

These 2 seem to always raise a big stink when it comes to protecting their music.

    Re: We’re Getting Closer…

I love the fact Jorma and the ABB still allow us to go and tape their shows. The last time I saw Kaukarano in a small club, granted several years ago, we were even allowed a sbd patch. I'll support both the ABB and Jorma as long as we're all still here. As for the no digital downloads policy, all things considered, that's ok by me...

    Re: We’re Getting Closer…

I'd like to hear these shows lossless.  Most the arguments I have heard here telling The Vault to not listen to the requests for lossless are erroneous. For example."they're only 2 tack board mixes"  Since when does the number of tracks have anything to do with fidelity? I'm sure the specs on the equipment and fidelity of these shows vary. But, the fact is MP3's do not have the fidelity of loss less.  I can hear it.  I'm not a that hung up about it. I'll buy some of the shows as is.  I want to hear them. But, I would get more, listen to them more and feel better about it if they were lossless.
Thanks for the great site and tunes!
