    Re: Rush and their Lyrics

    To oldhippy:

    Well stated Sir,
LZ did a lot of studio mixing and folding, but when they hit the stage, you got the real thing. No lip sync, no fakery, just 4 guys pounding out music from their souls.

LET'S SEE. THEIR FIRST 4 ALBUMS WERE SO GOOD THAT THERE WASN'T ONE BAD SONG ON ANY OF THEM. YEAH I GUESS THAT MAKES THEM OVERRATED, CONSIDERING NOW YOU CAN'T BUY A CD WITH 3 GOD SONGS ON IT BY THE NEW ARTISTS TODAY.

BFD... you have an opinion and titled the post with a inflammatory sentence. You're a troll, old man. Go back under the bridge with your record collection.

Worse: their "Glacier Set" in Munich, 1971. They did a horrible "Norman Plankey Homosexual Hayride", hillbilly commedy song then somewhat in vogue, must have dragged on fifteen to twenty minutes, part of which was five minutes of drum solo. Music was even worse than the homophobia.

    3 minute Battle of Bands

How not to be Led Zeppelin. No chipmunk singers. Rape is not cool. Unless you’re Focus and you’re doing Hocus Pocus, no yodeling. When you’ve got a good groove going, do not stop to show off. Give credit when you “borrow” more than a lick or a line. Don’t write about elves and gnomes because they don’t write about you. Popularity does not mean quality.

Cream, Rush and the Who have been mentioned in the thread. Rush? Blame Canada. Rush breaks the no chipmunks rule. I have to admit that when Rush was at its peak of popularity I was busy with the Ramones, Clash, Gang of Four and Bruce Springsteen. And I paid attention to any band with girls in it. Take off, to the great white north eh? (New album May, 1 2007. Snakes and Arrows.)

The Who. Well, they occasionally overreached creatively but they never pandered or sold out. Is it art? Most of it is. Did they rock? If that’s what they wanted to put across, they never failed. Could they write? Absolutely. And not a bustle in a hedgerow to be found. Were they original? Always, even if the effort fell short. I’d love it if the vault could put up a broader range of their career. They still rocked live even when they lost their beloved drummer. Match that, Zep fans. And though Daltry worked the upper ranges, he never ever embarrassed himself with yodeling. My ears are still ringing from The Clash opening for The Who. Anyone for tinnitus?.

Cream. Listen to the Oct 19, 1968 cuts here on the vault. Play their (credited) cover of Skip James’ I’m So Glad. Slide the slider over to 3:30. Let it ride for 3 minutes. All 12 cylinders firing at once. Intertwining genius improvisation. Rock without losing the Roll. In my humbug opinion, on par with any live improvisatory jazz or rock I’ve ever heard. Hey Peter Grant and the Led Zeppelin apologists, in the hour and 40 minutes here on the vault you’ve got to be able to find me 3 minutes that are more intense and inspired than 3:30 through 6:30 on I’m So Glad. Clapton and Bruce wailing incredibly and playing off of each other and then around 4:40 Ginger Baker kicks into over drive pushes Clapton and Bruce even Further. There you go. Battle of the bands. Of course a few minutes is no way to judge an artist or a performance but give it a shot. Dare ya.

(Went to a site to find some LZ lyric to get snotty about and here’s what I found, “This artist has requested that the lyrics to their songs be removed from the internet, and we respect this decision.” God bless Led Zeppelin.)

Re: 3 minute Battle of Bands

Are you guys really wasting your time with this guy?  Although I have to admit I envy you Peter.  You have so much time on your hands that you can actually sit here and argue about why you think Zep aren't that good.  I mean you actually have time to search the net to find some Zep lyrics so you can make a post about how crap they are.  Of course Cream or The Who never had any crap lyrics.  They were the equivalent of Shakespeare in the rock world.  Anyway, i do envy because you obvisouly have acheived every dream that you ever had, achieved every goal, that the only thing left for you to do is waste time by making fun of Zeppelin.  Wow.

On the other hand you could be one of those guys who are constantly pissed off that the bands they think are great just don;t seem to get the same props as Zeppelin and hence you need to vent your anger towards Zeppelin and their fans.

I've seen it a million times on so many different forums.  A pure Zep hater and that's all there is too it.  No matter how much evidence you give him he'll still have the same opinions.  Find him something as good as that 3.30 to 6.30 on I'm So Glad and guess what he'll say it ain't half as good.

Ever try and talk to someone who just won;t listen and pulls in all the usual cliche garbage about ripping this off and that off and the usual tour goings on crap.  I mean come on this guy is quoting from a Richard Cole book!  Yeah all the other bands you like must be sooo squeaky clean.

I'm sorry mate but Clapton has got to be the most over rated guitarist in the history of guitar playing.  Beck being the most under rated of course.

BTW Peter H, The Who should have done exactly what Zep did when Moon passed away - disband.  Without Moon it was not the Who and no matter how much you try and convince me you aren't going to change my mind.  Moon was an integral part of that band just like Bonham was to Zep.  They were key to those bands.

Anyway...everyone is entitled to an opinion.

Led Zeppelin are one of the best bands ever. Why else are they called the mighty Zep??

Re: 3 minute Battle of Bands

So if I call them "the mighty Milli Vanilli", that makes them one of the best groups ever?  ;-)

Re: 3 minute Battle of Bands

God I hate Cream. I'd also love to punch Pete in the face. Self absorbed twit. Alex Lifeson plays circles around both. Neil wrote the real elves and gnomes lyrics, and Geddy's squeal was unrivaled.

The Clash were also extremely over rated - right up there with Elvis Costello. Please learn to carry a tune. "And I live by the river"

I'd take Angus Young and Bon Scott over any of those clowns......

    Harry Vanda

Ours is a culture that rewards mediocrity.  Hence, the riduculously high number of replies to your mediocre post about a mediocre band.  Alas, I'm part of the problem.

Ours is also a culture which rewards negativism.  Matter of fact, I'm going to conduct a little experiment in this regard...

Re: The worst singer and the most overrated band in the history of rock

Uh, Jeff Beck thought Page was good enough to ask him to be in the Yardbirds with him.
Hey, I was 14 when Led Zep came out as well. I loved them. Oh, and the Jeff Beck Group as well. In fact I saw them on the same stage playing 'Jailhouse Rock' together in Queens.
By the way, if you had to reach for 'Beck-Ola' after hearing 'You Shook Me' by Led Zep, you would not have found it--it's on 'Truth' . Great album, but Zep had:
    1. Better song writers ( yeah, Pagey stole a lot, like Clapton as well 'strange brew' for instance is a note for note ripoff of Albert King, but his riffs and rhythms were imaginative and memorable as Hell. ha ha, 'Hell--Page' get it??? ) I think the JBG had like 2 original numbers.
    2. Great production. How can anyone deny the amazing sounds Jimmy came up with? . Beck's  'truth' did have that great sound on 'rock me baby' with Jeff's amp in a closet--it does sound like pagey there.
    3. they were a BAND-why they lasted.
Yeah they played for hours and were not afraid to get completely reckless and stupid onstage--good for them! Jeff thought Page was good enough to ask him to be in the Yardbirds with him.
I used to have trouble with Percey but he has grown on me over the years.
I'd say most over-rated is Elvis Costello, has not done anything great since 'this year's model'. You may call playing with Burt Bacharach rock--I don't ( and I like him ).The kind of guy old rockers who listen to Tony Bennett now call a genius..

Re: The worst singer and the most overrated band in the history of rock

Playing live,Zep was not the best act around. But,man...as studio recording artists and songwriters, they have earned a status no one else has or ever will have.

Physical Graffiti...Presence....II...c'mon,no one else has done that kinda stuff.

One thing though. Mark Farner and Grand Funk were kickin' ass as a three piece in '69-'70,and those live shows sound great. Farner sang great, played guitar, had the long hair,no-shirt,rock and roll stud personna down way before Plant.AND they sold out stadiums like no one had ever done before them..

Long live Wolfgang's Vault and rock and roll discussion!!

Re: The worst singer and the most overrated band in the history of rock

A few years back Page released a 3 disc set called "How the West Was Won".  These are all live tracks.  You should give these a listen and then maybe re-think your opinion on Zeppelin "not the best act around".  Did you ever see them in concert?  I did and they absolutely kicked ass - no question.  Not that I have anything against GFR - they were a great band, but back then nothing could hold a candle to Zeppelin.  Jimmy Page is a guitar god, along with Clapton, Santana, Townsend.  Farner is not even in the same league as these legends.  BTW, I just saw Clapton in concert for the first time (never got to see him all those years ago) last month and he had Derek Trucks playing with him.  Trucks is the next guitar god - he has got incredible talent.  Clapton also kicked-ass during that show - he's still got it!  Where's Farner these days????
