hvy2nz's responses IN CAPS to THE led zep hate monger:

Got your attention didn’t I?      (AGAIN)

Thems are fightin words.    (IS THEMS)???

It’s all opinion anyway isn’t it?

I’ve been listening to these recordings, trying once again to figure out what everyone sees/saw in this band. All I can find is white boy guitar wanking  (WHOS THE WANKER)

     and strangled cat screeching.

If Jimmy Page played as off key and out of control as Robert Pants sang, you would not be listening to this band. Ever. So that’s a good thing right? Page is often in tune. And he can play really fast. That’s got to be good too, right? Playing fast can cover up a lack of imagination. Same with loud.

The louder they play, the less you can really hear  (BRILLIANT STATEMENT)

so that the part where Jones stops playing bass because the drummer, guitarist and singer all seem to be doing different songs just sort of sneaks by.  (YOU MUST MEAN CREAM)

Yes but they redefined rock and roll. For the worse. Just because dozens of bands copied the self-indulgent and painful vocals doesn’t mean they were a positive influence. Take a stopwatch to any of these tracks and see how long Plant can go before he goes out of control or pitch. It took 20 years for rock vocals to recover from the damage Plant caused.

Singing matters. (BRIT KNEE   JESSICA   ASHLEY  ETC...)

And then they just stop. We are so cool that we’re going to pause for a few minutes so we can show off. Step out and buy a tee shirt if you want. Write a post card home. “Having a wonderful time, wish I could hear.”

I hope the light show was good because the emperor had no clothes  (TALKING SOME DEEP SIHT HER,  MUST BE A PYSCO OR THERAPISSS OR...)

Thank you for the name calling. That's very deep.   (REAL DEEP)

Review of tour manager Richard Cole's Stairway to Heaven: Led Zeppelin Uncensored by tour manager Richard Cole

"We get detailed accounts of lead guitarist Jimmy Page's obsession with witchcraft and whips, and of the band's supposed pact with Satan, in which the lads sold their souls to the Prince of Evil in exchange for commercial success. The band got nine mega-platinum albums, tens of millions of dollars and the teen girls; the Prince of Evil got the souls of an alky fetishist, a junkie leather freak, a singer with too much hair and a so-so keyboardist with a wife and kids. Once again, Satan got the short end of the stick.   (yOU FEEL BAD FOR SATAN???)

But it was a band that was long on influence, and most of it was negative. (WTF)

Virtually everything that is maddening about contemporary rock music comes directly from Led Zeppelin:   (WTF)  AGAIN

    bad album covers,
    pretentious lyrics,
     pointless guitar virtuosity,
     leaden-footed drumming,
skinny singers with too much blond hair,
    pop Satanism,
the complete absence of a sense of humor."

Joe Queenan - Wall Street Journal

SHOULD BE IN CAPS      hvy2nz says.....and I'm not a led zep worshipper.....but isn't there a place for your hate like the democratic underground,  my space rush linden bomb

    long live music   peace out

lots of people enjoy when robert plant screeches and screams. take for example late in "since i've been loving you" from the how the west was won when he starts scatting like "dananananana nynynynynynyy". sure it many be out of pitch but who cares its the  power and the passion that translates to listeners

Re: The worst singer and the most overrated band in the history of rock

Led Zeppelin was the greatest band in the history of rock. They are still the most popular and beloved band by three generations of fans. Of all the great bands, Led Zeppelin got the least hype. They became so enormous strictly on the word of mouth their music inspired and their phenomenal live prowess. Don't let a close minded Zep. hating moron like Peter H. bother you. He knows he represents a tiny minority and gets off on irritating the vast and ever growing multitude of Led Zeppelin fans. Led Zeppelin's music is the final word on this genius band, and that timeless music will continue to be loved and revered long after we are gone.

Re: The worst singer and the most overrated band in the history of rock

To paraphrase you.... "What a load of pretentious crap"...I personally liked the the 27second stretch in the middle of "Tied To the Whipping Post" right after the 3minute and 22 second mark when you can hear the roadie cracking Dickie Betts a Heineken -(Allman Brothers - 05/12/72 Fillmore North) better than any Zeppelin song ever....

Did some stoner jump out of his Charger and kick the crap out of you in Grade 10 while "Four Sticks" was blasting behind him? What is up with this pointless diatribe? Go pick on the Devo fans.....

Other than "Dyer Maker" Zep have nothing to apologize for.....

    Pistol Pete

Page is God....you sir, obviously have no clue what Rock n Roll is all about. Led Zeppelin IS Rock n Roll. Go listen to James Taylor or Joan Baez.

Re: The worst singer and the most overrated band in the history of rock

I agree with the original post. I was a fan of Zeppelin unitl i realised that at some point in there career they shot and murdered the "roll" in "rock and roll". music has suffered ever since.

Re: The worst singer and the most overrated band in the history of rock

Don't sweat that gnat. I'll bet a dime to a dollar he was never a real Zeppelin fan. I've been around a long time and I have never met anyone who once they became a Led Zeppelin fan, changed their mind. Led Zeppelin is still the most popular revered band in history, and therefore will attract the most critics. The vast majority of the criticism is petty ignorance. Led Zeppelin's recorded output was pure inspired genius and will endure longer than any other of the rock era.

Re: The worst singer and the most overrated band in the history of rock

This PeterH guy must have had the part of his brain removed that is associated with great music. I don't care what he thinks, he must be really pretentious himself to think anyone would agree with his dribble. No one will ever be able to match what they did. That's what makes them so unique. I love listening to every nuance and even mistakes in these old recordings. I'm sorry I had to reply to the gnats statement, but they were fightin words. Maybe we can take up a collection so this guy can buy a clue!

Re: The worst singer and the most overrated band in the history of rock

Thank you Lee, it was getting lonely over here in the LZ-is-over-rated camp.

I love the fishing that’s going on. Lets list the bait: Devo. Joan Baez. The Allman Brothers. BRIT KNEE, JESSICA, ASHLEY. Cream. James Taylor. I must hate all rock if I don’t drool over the Zep. And LZ is more important than the Beatles.

Wait let me turn down the Vault Radio, I was just listening to Elvis Costello 06/07/1968. Pump It Up. The whole house got rocked off its foundation. The whole house. Not kidding. Including the garage. It’s heavy and it’s pop and it’s got the power and the glory and it didn’t rip off old blues guys and it didn’t require someone shrieking in a fringed vest or pretentiously sawing at a guitar with a violin bow. And as much as I love a good long jam they got in, did their work and got out in 3 minutes and 44 seconds. If only more things in life were as effective and efficient at the same time.

Anyway, as far as the bait list above, I think Devo was right. We are de-evolving. I think that Stairway to Heaven was the pinnacle of western culture. Everything that’s happened since then has been a disappointment. Buy eye ing a stair air way to hev un. As far as the pop girls go, I’d be more interested in knowing if Britney and Ashley’s mom is single. James Taylor was on the radio when I took driver’s ed back in 71 and the girls I liked, liked him so I gotta give him some slack. He didn’t ruin rock and roll. Neither did the Allman Brothers. (Although I bet Greg has worn a fringed vest once or twice.)

What I tried to explain, and what Lee captures is that if one moves on, over time one might realize how derivative and pretentious the Zep was. Turn off the black lights and come on out of the dorms people.

And to the guy who uses Peter Grant’s name, there is no truth to the rumor that Elvis Presley killed himself rather than go on tour for Grant. Peter Grant should be thanked for the fact that his tenacious management style left Plant and Page in good enough financial shape that they’ve been able to largely leave us alone since Led Zeppelin broke up (quitters.)

Re: The worst singer and the most overrated band in the history of rock

Hey! Obviously, you Led Zep smashers never saw them Live! OK..I am a 57 year old rocker/player and saw Zep at the Long Beach Arena (Cal.)in 1974 and in St. Paul,Minnesota in 1978(?). In Long Beach they were spectacular! The guys were tight and the crowd was awed. The sound system contained 4 huge Urie (Russian speakers) that hung from the center of the ceiling and pointed north, south, east, and west. This allowed sections of the sound to rotate around the arena as if it were a Leslie speaker effect. ( I was in the top rear seats and could see the speakers well.) Whole Lotta Love effects were ....mind boggling. Robert's voice was impeccable, Pagey's speed playing and note ad libbing were genius, Jonesy kept the foundation bass driving, and Bonzo drummed relentlessly, and with his hands on solo. It was..and ..will be...the greatest blues/rock/metal concert I ever attend. To bad you missed it.  In St. Paul, the crowd was out of control with bottle rockets streaming past our faces and crowd surge burying me under a 300 pound corpse. The management is too blame for that seating fiasco (no chairs on the main floor.) We left.

Re: The worst singer and the most overrated band in the history of rock

For whatever it's worth, I don't believe Zep toured in either '74 or '78.  You're probably thinking of '75 and '77, if I had to guess.

Re: The worst singer and the most overrated band in the history of rock

I don't agree with the comment that Plant is the worst singer in the world.  In my opinion, he is one of the best!  I have a lot of his material - including solo work.

That being said, I also own a few Zep boots and I will say that I've heard some sloppy performances.  The 2 shows featured on this site can attest to that.  And unless you're high, why would you want a 30 minute version of Dazed & Confused when 7 or 8 minutes will do.  Play more songs instead of stretching them all out.  I know there are millions of people who will disagree but that's the beauty of it, I'm entitled to my opinion as much as you are.

    Cheers!
