Thanks for sharing this bit of the show's history, batmite.  Coupled with lenscap's photo story, it adds a really nice layer to this concert.  I'm so envious of you and lenscap, having been to this show.  I just listened to this for the first time last weekend and was blown away by the raw intensity on display.  It must have been a blast actually being there.  

Eternal gratitude, of course, to WV for making this amazing collection available for a youngster like myself, unable to attend these shows for lack of being born yet, to listen to and enjoy at my convenience.

I don't know about '68 but I saw the Who in the summer of "67 and they were excellent.  This was the tour where not that many people knew who they were yet, and Pictures of Lily was a big hit.  They opened for Hermans Hermits along with The Blues Magoos.  I must say though, that the Blues Magoos were one of my favorites of the time and they always put on a great show....very underated band.  The Who were still doing thier instrument smashing at the end of the show and it was fantastic..

Nashville - I didn't see that card. My first Who show was at the Fillmore East (it might have still been called the Anderson Theatre) when they were on a bill with the Rich Kids, Mountain, and the Blues Project (maybe somebody else too). I recall "prepping" for the show with my buddies at the Old Stanley on Avenue B. The Who were playing those silly Murray the K shows uptown with Cream, so they got a chance to stretch out. The Blues Project had a pretty good local rep, and some people thought they would close the show. Of course that would have been foolish. I'm pretty sure that was in '67.

You should check out the book "Roadwork" by Tom Wright - it has some hilarious stories about the HH, Who, Blues Magoos tour. You can just stand and read it at B&N or Borders.

OK here's the real stuff (yes, I'm even boring myself!). There were TWO Who shows in 1967 at the Village Theater, and I went to both. The July one was Chrysalis, Richie Havens, Blues Project, Who.

The other one, in November, was Rich Kids, Vagrants (with Leslie West, later to form Mountain),Who.

If you remember the East Village in the 60's accurately, you weren't there!

1967 - the year "heads" became "freaks".

Being a big Who fan I think this is great stuff,Raw but great.The who have evolved into such a

historic band that it is a pleasure to hear them at the begining.What a thrill it must have been to that crowd.I have seen The Who 16 times since 1980 and heard a lot of boot legs,but this is extraordinary.
