Born Again Ottawa.....was interesting .....yes very cool with members ariving via tunnels (Stone Henge stuff ) our show had a Spinal Tap ish start to it .  They came out to lots of smoke and some background music but no mic and missing Iomi's guitar  if I remember correctly ....definately no mic....anyway they hit the rewind button and started completely over ...never seen that before ....I guess this was the grand enterance and they wanted it to be grand.  I also remember barely being able to hear Gillian's bongos (well actually not at all) did he use these at all the shows .....oh yah Nazareth kicked ass ...they were awesome...almost stole the show...some would say they did....possibly why they were off the bill soon after? Anybody else see the Ottawa show.   Getting tickets to Heaven and Hell today ...that should be a kick .....same lineup and venue as Mob Rules Tour our NHL arena not available ....one differnce 60$ more! Can't imagine spending 70$ for a concert in the Ottawa Civic Centre.

Re: Black Sabbath with Ian Gillan?

I wouldn't bother looking for any gillan/sabbath stuff, i saw them in 1986 at the reading festival (england), they had bev bevan on drums (ex elo) and they were total cr*p

Re: Black Sabbath with Ian Gillan?

err...that was not Ian Gillan he left in '83 (see all previous posts for reasons) but Ray Gillen ( Gillen with an E ) or possibly Tony Martin but definitely NOT Ian Gillan - but then again Reading was defunct by '86, so.... you must mean 1983. Perhaps you had been ligging too much special brew eh?

Re: Black Sabbath with Ian Gillan?

All I know is that I reviewed Born Again for my high school newspaper and I basically said it sucked.  I made fun of the song "Thrashed" and called these guys over-the-hill geezers wanting to reclaim their past glory with a has-been singer who couldn't remember any of Black Sabbath's song lyrics whenver he played live with them.  The paper came out on a Friday and that night I went to a party.  Some guy in a black leather jacket came over and asked me if I was the guy who wrote that record review ripping into the band.  I told him it was me and he hit me...  Well, I was shocked because I couldn't believe that someone would get that mad over a record review- I thought the pen was mightier than the sword- I was listening to The Doors, The Clash, Bowie, XTC, Buzzcocks, etc..  and thought the New Wave of British Heavy Metal was for silly people.  Well, I finally listened to this album a few weeks ago and it isn't that bad.  Tony's guitar tone is nice and Ian doesn't sound like an over-the-hill geezer. There are some memorable riffs that were even ripped off by Guns n Roses a few years later (i.e. Zero).  Anyway, I still don't think that I should have gotten hit over the record review, but the older I get, I realize that this isn't that bad of an album and that Black Sabbath will alway have fans no matter what incarnation the band takes...  Of course, if I were to review Black Sabbath's 1986 album Seventh Star.....................................................................

Re: Black Sabbath with Ian Gillan?

My first real concert was Sabbath with Dio on the Mob Rules tour in Edmonton. Still have the ticket stub - $15 Canadian. I pulled a clip off youtube of the band back in 1981 0r 82 and RJD looks a hundred years old back then but Iommi was kicking ass.....

If only I could get in the Wayback machine and watch the show again and really appreciate it...

Re: Black Sabbath with Ian Gillan?

my first Sabbath show was with Ozzy , June 10th 1978 at Hammersmith Odeon London with Van Halen as support act. I caught several shows with Ronnie James Dio and was at the Reading Festival in August 1983 for the only UK show featuring Ian Gillan.

The BBC recorded the Reading show and should still be available as a bootleg if you search hard enough for it. The BBC also recorded another Sabbath show at the Manchester Apollo circa 88-89 featuring Tony Martin on vocals which was a very good gig.

Re: Black Sabbath with Ian Gillan?

The born again tour was effing great, it was at the cleveland convention center Quiet Riot opened the the show, the Stonehenge stage was cool, tons of crosses comming down from the stage and the little born again guy on the album cover running around the stage.

I was sitting at the side of the stage for Deep Purple and saw Mr Blackmoore toss his guitar on the stage and walk off during during encores, i dont think too many people saw it,so i never seen Deep Purple do smoke on the water, but i did see Sabbath do smoke on the water.

Re: Black Sabbath with Ian Gillan?

    Dood,

There's a bunch of bootleg videos from the "Born Again" tour on YouTube.com. I spent most of my weekend watching early Deep Purple videos on YouTube. Not a bad weekend.

Re: Black Sabbath with Ian Gillan?

I have the Worchester MA show on CD (dubbed from FM Audio master). Hot Line, Zero the Hero and Smoke on the Water all kick ass. I missed this line-up, but did get to see the Live Aid reunion in Philly, and the Seventh Star tour with Ray Gillen the next year. Got my tickets for Heaven and Hell in May.

I'd be happy to do trades for the show.
