To paraphrase Jack Bruce 'you can blame Led Zeppelin for heavy metal'

Jimmy actually once asked Jack to join Zeppelin

Uh, sorry, but The Who could play Zeppelin into dust, and were a far more important band in the history of rock music. They were heavier and wrote better songs with clever original lyrics. The members were more skilled and creative. It's just that simple.

And about Bob Marley, gimme a break man, have you ever heard D'yer Maker? THAT is shitty carribean calypso music if I ever heard it. Bob had more to sing about than wizards, magic, and medieval times. And he wasn't an *** who stole music, disrespected women (groupies), and raped girls with a shark.

    Weirdly,

We'll agree to disagree on the LZ Lyrics and theft thing.  But - Hey I like the WHo - I think almost everything up to "Who are you" is classic shite and live they were fcking great. I also think their reach exceeded their grasp with some of the pretentious shite they attempted to put out but at least it's an A for effort. But to  claim they were far more important blah blah blah is shinola. I have everything (everything) they put out including the box set - personally there is about 4 or 5 albums that will never leave my IPOD (Live at Leeds - Who's next - Sings my generation - Meaty beaty - WHo are you - By numbers) but there is a lot of stuff that makes me cringe that they put out - I can't even listen to it any more - while on the Zeppelin side it is only DYER MAKER (Agreed - one of the worst songs ever released in the 1970's). The WHO were a great pop singles band. But there was never the depth to the music that LZ had. But it is kind of like arguing who would win the world series between the '27 yankees and the '04 red sox....on any given day one was greater than the other but all in all I'd call it a tie.....as for who has more influence over what today, give ME some examples of bands today influenced by the Who.

But the best band of the  '70s and most under rated was in fact Rush. Alex Lifeson can play rings around both Jimmy Page and Eric Clapton - for days - on end - with his eyes closed. (And the elves and wizards lyrics by Peart kick ass......)

Hi Peter, like your screen name, Led Zep's Manager eh? Ha!

I am the older brother with the Nova and the eight tracks. Come On, we all knew it was doobie music. Led Zep was for getting stoned, nothing more and nothing less. At time laughable, (when Jimmy almost kills himself with his scarf during LIve Aid) Trying to grind it out one more time....

The last time I saw them was Oakland, the first show in 78...Day on the Green.. My how they could make that concrete shake rattle and roll....

Was Plant the worst singer? hardly, in fact if I remember correctly, Beck wanted a singer like Plant and a drummer like Bonnan (sic). Beck complained that Rod was a weak singer who wanted to stick with a motown type format. (Though I always like his material with the Faces...)

Well you managed to get eveyone's undies in a bunch. For moi, I regard the recordings as a very historical interest. I was there, (The Fishs' last show--Jerry and a whole bunch came on down to jam the last set...Zep went down to do a show in San Jose I think...{things get a bit hazy here...})

best Band of the 70s is RUSH? well that's not saying too much for the 70s cause there wasn't much happening...

    have a good one

Rush? Well they're no Cream, but they are an extremely talented, great band, and it's a crime that they aren't in the rock hall of fame. But man, Neil Peart's lyrics are even worse than Page and Plant's. Probably the cheesiest lyrics I've ever heard.

Re: The worst singer and the most overrated band in the history of rock

Ok, so we laid down on the floor in the stereo listening room at Sherman Clay on LSD and listened to the first album when it was first released and delivered to the store. We were hooked and had to see them when they came to Fillmore West in early '69. It was so disapointing. Plant was so drunk that he could hardly stand up. Jimmy Page was visably up set with him and at one point tried to kick him in the butt. It took us a few songs to figure out what was going on on stage. We didn't want to believe that we spent three and a half bucks and waited in line to see this BS. It was such a weak performance. Loud and unprofessional is all I remember.

We got to see so much great music in those years. Just look at all the concerts and performers listed on this site. LZ was just another loud band. There were west coast bands and British band that put them to shame live. Records are just snap shots in time, good or bad. I'm talking about shows that I saw.

By the time stadium shows like Days on the Green started to happen, there was this whole second wave of loud, lame rock bands, that just left us cold. The Bay Area had so much great music happing that we just grew up, and left LZ and the Zep clones to the teeny boppers that were too young to get into clubs.

Maybe they weren't the most overrated and Plant the worst singer but I can't listen to them anyway. There is too much great new music to get into to waste the time.

If I have had the choice of back stage VIP passes to see Page and Plant's musical masturbation or sit on the couch, watch TV and play along with the commercials... the couch wins.

Re: The worst singer and the most overrated band in the history of rock

Wow that's harsh....I still like them...personally never having seen them live, I think the public record on how good they were live is a little stronger than what you saw - but hey it's all gravy

But you reminded me of a Spinal Tap moment....I saw The Cult a few times but the first was opening for Metallica on the "Justice" tour. Astbury was so fucked up he couldn't speak and singing was an adventure. In the middle of "Sanctuary" Duffy's guitar mic crapped out and it went dead silent. While the roadies rushed on stage and tried to fix it the band kind of degenerated midsong, Astbury started singing "*** *** *** *** *** ***..." and then proceeded to fall off the stage, classic stuff...

Reminds me of another time I saw Soundgarden and Cornell was pissed about something - went to boot a cup of water into the crowd, fell on his ass, and Kim Thayil started laughing his ass off. The enocore was cut short - mid "outshined"... fcking hilarious....

2 weeks until RJD and Black Sabbath...fckin A!

    Rush and their Lyrics

Personally I think they are THE most under rated band of the our time. Pearts lyrics changed starting with Moving pictures but the early stuff (Bytor and the Snowdog! all of 2112!)  is cringe worthy - luckily the music is fcking phenomenal......

But the lyrics to LZ aren't that fucking bad.....have you ever listened to White Room or Tales of Brave Ulysses?

    Peter Grant:

Yes, those lyrics kick all kinds of ass. White Room's lyrics are heavy, they paint a picture of a very scary, desolate place. Cream had killer lyrics, like on SWLABR, Deserted Cities of the Heart (my favourite), Sweet Wine, What a Bringdown, etc. In terms of drummers who write cool lyrics, I think Ginger has Peart beat (Sweet Wine and WaB were both Ginger's). Some of Pete Brown's lyrical contributions sucked, but Jack Bruce was always a master of creating a musical environment to suit them perfectly.

Overall, Cream > Led Zeppelin, in every aspect of music

On your list of great Cream lyrics, how could you possibly leave out Pressed Rat and Warthog????

    Re: Rush and their Lyrics

Didn't Ginger also coin "the looser the waistband, the deeper the quicksand" or was that peter james Bond?

Actually I was kidding, I always kind of blank out after the tired starlings and purple fishes so I am not sure about "your too young, and I'm too well hung".....(David St Hubbins). I think Cream took themselves far tyoo seriously but then again it's only an impression - I have barely listened to (except for Diraeli gears) and/or read about them.

My personal favourite lyricist is in fact Robbie Robertson. Puts them all to shame....but Bon Scott is my second favourite....

To each one's own cup of tea.

    Re: Rush and their Lyrics

Can't beleive the crap I read on this site. Most have no idea what a good band is. Nowadays you don't need any talent because everything is fixed in the studio. They can make anyone sound good. I saw Zepplin 3 times they they were fantastic everytime. Much more than just a so called heavy metal band. They were way beyond that label for anyone who cared to realy listen.
