    Re: Mahavishnu Orchestra

Thanks for the speedy reply Panagos. I did hear those blasts of white noise exactly where you said in the stream. I relayed this info to the techs and they are fixing the stream as we speak. The actual recording is fine and it was indeed a technical issue on our end. Thank you for bringing it to our attention. Check it again a little later today and it should play fine for you. Cheers, Alan

    Re: Mahavishnu Orchestra

needless to say this mahavishnu stuff is amazing. what an incredible flashback and what incredible music.

i was fortunate to have seen some amazing shows, that i'm now finding on the archive. (while a high school student in poughkeepsie ny.)

--larry coryell/mahavishnu at SUNY new paltz - 1973? - i haven't heard heard the coryell show yet but was quite blown away by both of these powerhouses.

--john mclaughlin/jeff beck at new haven colliseum - 1975 - beck was amazing with bernard purdie and max middleton. mclaughlin was interesting to me, but not as interesting as the mahavishn stuff and i'd seen MO twice before (originally at vassar college, probably 1972)

it's amazing to hear how MO sounded live after all these years, and especially the last few years of rediscovering birds of fire and inner mounting flame.

thanks for blessing us with this amazing work. (still unbelievable after all these years)

    Re: Mahavishnu Orchestra

The problem with white noise is gone but there is meeting of the spirits and open country joy together as one track and then open country joy again on its own as the second track!!!

Look at the charts, most downloaded. Well mahavishnu was first few days ago, now its 7th, still a good position, showing that people are really interested!!!

    Re: Mahavishnu Orchestra

Thanks.  I was really looking for the most downloaded performer (s) all-time on WV.  Theoretically that could be Mahavishnu since thet have so many places in the chart.

    Regards,

    Walter

    Mahavishnu Orchestra

Totally love all of the WV shows, but I'm really digging the Kenyon College show. Very good sound, and the band is not yet running all over each other. Some of Billy's solo segments are just great. Anyone else feel the same way?

    Re: Mahavishnu Orchestra

Hope you don't mind a bit of self-promotion. for the cause..but us fusion fans need to stick together.  Here is a note I sent out today to like-minded people:

    For you McLaughlin fans...

I was informed today that officially the interview I did with John McLaughlin for Jazz.com is the alltime most popular!

As part of my special project on John for jazz.com, I also wrote a column which I think John's fans will find quite interesting. It has just been posted here:

I have always maintained that people are so in awe of John's music and skills, that they often overlook the fact that he really has spent a great deal of time honoring his jazz forefathers. I hope this column will help change that attitude a bit.

    Hi Alan,

Haven't posted here in a while, but just wanted to say continued thanks for all the Maha concerts that have been posted. I have purchased almost all of them.

It's so great to be able to compare how they would vary a song from concert to concert and  it just proves what a genius band they were.

I have two questions. Do you have the Philmarmonic Hall show from 1/21/73 and will you be posting that anytime ?

All the shows released so far have been from 1973. Will there be any shows upcoming from before that time being released ?

Thanks very much !  Best wishes,     TED

    Hi Ted,
Always nice to hear from those enjoying the MO recordings.  We have not located that specific Philharmonic Hall show, although it is possible it may be among MO recordings yet to be addressed. We also have several unlabelled and/or mislabelled masters that I'm still trying to determine dates and venues on.  They all are 1973 recordings.  I can tell approximately where each fits within the 1973 chronology, using setlists, the manner in which certain songs are performed and process of date/venue elimination from shows already logged, but without much else to go on, it is extremely challenging to correctly identify them specifically. I'm a long time MO collector myself and the audience recordings that circulate among fans have been the biggest cross-referencing help so far, other than the initial educational help that both Walter K and Elliott Sears most graciously provided me via several conversations early on. Needless to say, the MO recordings are a monumentally challenging project, but it has also been one of the most satisfying I've ever had the pleasure to be involved in.

All the Dawson MO recordings that I've logged so far are from 1973 and barring any unforeseen surprises, I believe that will be the case on his recordings.  However, I do know the Bill Graham Archive does contain at least one 1972 MO recording and there may be others I'm not aware of yet.

Either way, there is still plenty more to come so stick around,    Alan
