Re: The worst singer and the most overrated band in the history of rock

Look from one rock fan to another lets just face the facts. As a Who fan, I'm willing to say that Led Zeppelin is an awesome band. Their fillmore show here is awesome. But I'm going to say that as of what's available in vault, the Who at the Spectrum 73, at least to me is better than the zep shows in the vault. I'm not trying to start anything but I am open to criticism.

Re: The worst singer and the most overrated band in the history of rock

Now Im not saying I like every song that they did but they were very before there time... when you think of bands like The Buckinghams and Tommy James  and other bands that were on the charts at the time they came out with there first albums and the different kinds of sounds they were doing it was mind blowing , there was nothing like it they were heavy when everything was light and bubbly like ginger ale. and the more I go and listen to those albums and early shows it still is great stuff.   its heavy and wild and full of power yet soft and loving and bluesy. it is still ahead now as far as music goes. there isnt much that compares except the obvious , The Who, Jimi Hendrix ,Eric Clapton  where the new music that compairs its not there its not here so ill go back to the 70s almost everyday . it doesnt matter I could go on but I wont for now

    Re: Twsatmobithor

You saw them twice?? welll you probably really hated them then....or were you trying to be hip.
Do you play guitar?? if not *** off.....if you do ....write a riff won't ya....let's hear what you got to *** about.  My favorite album is "Physical Graffitti"....what is yours?? you saw 'em twice...so you must like something?? I suggect you give a listen to "Immigrant Song" from the "BBC Sessions" disc....they tear it up ....real raw ....no dubbing.  Believe me.....Page could PLAY!!!  The lead on "Since I've been Lovin' You" is phenomenal...no one can give chills on the spine like Jimmy.----(Jimi and Peter Green excluded)

I've been listening to Derek Trucks for and Susan Tedeshi for a while and yes he has his own sound . Both are very talented Derek can down right play. I'll let you know how he is in concert, he's playing at Merriweather Post in April I'll be there. Someone else to give a listen is a group called Mofro, out of Fla.

Are you kidding me? Led Zeppelin influenced every heavy metal/hard rock band out there. While I agree that Roger Daltrey had a far superior voice, Robert Plant is more influential.

I have always thought that Page was an overrated guitarist, his phrashing is often clumsy and incoherent. Plant has a good rock voice, but I think much of the stuff he's sung on has left a lot to be desired. Zeppelin, along with contemporary groups like 'White Stripes' and 'Radiohead' are definitely cases of 'The Emperor's New Clothes'.

    Thanks x

Re: The worst singer and the most overrated band in the history of rock

I was 18 in 1968 when I saw Led Zep for the first time at the Fillmore East. I knew someone that got us in to the sold out show for free and to top it off I had some great acid. They were outrageous; my tender eyes and ears had never seen or heard anything like that before.

I listened to Zep so much during that period and for years afterward I got flashbacks every time I heard the first album.

I saw them another five times; at the Boston Garden, Central Pak in NYC and Madison Square Garden. I was a fan.  Although I really didn't care for anything that they did after the fourth album and for me at least their music doesn’t hold up as well as some groups from that period like Cream, Traffic, The Beatles, Santana, Blind Faith, etc.

I have to agree that they are overrated. Just because they have been influential doesn't mean that they were all that good. This may be hard to accept but there were a lot of crappy bands and a whole genre of music made by lesser light bands that followed in their wake.   If you're a fan of heavy metal you are going to take exception to this post.

Plant never lets the music breath, he tries to fill every space and Page's live playing was very sloppy.  He was a master at apprehending styles and music from the past and then incorporating them into the bands music. He was the first rock guitarist that took standard blues licks and used high volume and slur’s that would sort of trick the ear into thinking that he was playing fast. McLaughlin, Metheny, Demiola play fast clean and complex.

There was a fair amount of controversy when Zep's first album came out.  Jeff Beck was considered a better (read: purer) blues guitarist.  Page was very comfortable in the studio and did have a knack for creating a "wall of sound" type of effect on their records. He also conveyed a mystical atmosphere that translated very well into the LSD experience (much like Hendrix music did).  His playing veered pretty far from the blues most of which his music was derived from. Not that's a bad thing.

Page brought some wonderful styles to our ears.  With the exception of John Renbourn and Bert Jansch Page's acoustic work was unmatched during that time. He was an innovator if not an original.

Look, I'm conflicted about this group as I am about the Stones.  Their music doesn't hold up after years of exposure to the variety of music that I've been listened to. I hear it for what it is and back in the day the image that groups like Zep and the Stones along with its newness and my youth was an influence on my uneducated ears. Like one poster said: it's just an opinion!

Dear if6ws9 - to be brief, I too saw LZ a number of times and you couldn't have stated my feelings any better. Today when I see concert footage of Plant with his little belly shirts and his hands on his hips it creeps me out.

I still feel their first album was truly great and ground breaking in many ways but they lost me after that. To be sure there are many cuts on various albums that are very good but for the most part overrated.

Re: The worst singer and the most overrated band in the history of rock

    Hey "if",

Interesting post. Just when i started to get pissed off, i started to understand where you were coming from. It was kinda like saying your best friend as a "yoot" was a bully. Well, he was still my best friend! And I agree with your comment about not caring for any of their stuff past their 4th LP. But i guess i am looking at them from a different angle.

No doubt there were, are, better guitarists, ie: Carlos, Pat M., Jimi, Jaco P. (sorry, i play bass). And as for singers, same. But for me, i was starving for the exact sound The Zep put out. I lothed tinker toy music (bubble gum, if you will) and tho Motown had a great sound of its own, well, being a new musician at that time, i loved the feelings The Zep put out. What i'm saying is that i really wouldn't agree that they were the most over rated rock band in history.

So your next question to me will probably be, what band is more over rated. Well, i guess i may not rate them high enough to over rate them. I still get off on some of J.P. Jones' bass licks. Simple? Somewhat, but they kick.

So i guess as much as you were conflicted about this group, i am too. I guess i just like them for what they were, a Kick a-- band that you could crank up your 8-track to and air-guitar the crap out of!!! Peace

Re: The worst singer and the most overrated band in the history of rock

You think satan got the worse part of the deal? no, he did what he wanted. This is a battle for souls.

satan only wants to rob Christ of any souls he can. He laughs at God whenever he can lie, steal, destroy a soul to hell.   He does NOT care about who the individual is, it is just a soul to him, period. This way, he see himself as getting even with God for kicking his sorry ass out of hell for having a big head. He was in charge of music, if I remember right.

I just read an account of a man who was dead for 90 minutes. He said the music in heaven was incredible....he could hear hundreds of songs being played at the same time, and could discern each one seperately, simutainously. Imagine that. He said it would make no sense to anyone who never experienced it. He also said the colors were incredible. We don't have anything like them here.

But i digress....satan will decieve for the purpose of denying anyone from heaven, just to do it. He don't want to be in hell alone, and wants to deny all he can of heaven with Christ.

Seek ye first the Kingdom of God, and all these things will be added unto you.

Re: The worst singer and the most overrated band in the history of rock

Where the *** do you people come from with your Big headed egotistical overblown bullshit.  You wouldn't know music from your own second rate miserable asses! You come here and write your dismal blabberings and pat youselves so far on your backs you can reach your other face. And for being some worthless critic! Well brother let me tell you something. You don't mean ***. You wish you liked bands like Zeppelin because their the ones who are fucking your girlfriends. Their the ones who could care less about sycophantic doormats as yourselves. Because you missed the boat. It ain't supposed to be about in tune and pitch control. That's for the jerk-offs alone in their moms basement adjusting their glasses, listening and waiting for something to criticize, because that's all they got in this world.

What is "over rated?", and who cares.

Someone said "it's just an opinion"...How about I throw a few stupid comments out there: Abbey Road sucks, Jeff Beck can't play ***, Zappa can't write a song...these can be called opinions...anyone can throw crap against the wall just to see what sticks.

Re: The worst singer and the most overrated band in the history of rock

Having never seen zep live, because i am only 18 today, i can't say i know as much about their live act as you, but i still know zeppelin very well. The one thing i have to disagree with you on is that their music "doesnt hold up after years of exposure to the variety of music we've been listening to". I play bass in a band and for each member in my band led zeppelin is either most or top 5 most influential to each one of us. Albeit my guitarist is no where near as sketchy as him it was jimmy page's producing that made zeppelin so much more powerful. And what about Bonham! Noone can compete with bonham's power on the kit and his sound gets to me everytime.

What you said about plant not letting the music breath is an interesting observation. I can see where your coming from but you still haveto admit to this day noone can sing with the same amount of range and versatility and style as plant. Maybe he was a little busy but i think it fits the music well.

And i do agree that zeppelin created a huge wave of *** in the 80s, but i think thats just a societal tendency. There are amazing bands that come out, and then 10 years later there are bands trying to do the same thing but in a different way and it loses its legitimacy and its power. When you think of it from 65-75 music was amazing. then the 80s were ***. then the 90s were amazing. then the 2000's were ***. Im hoping for a new breakthrough in music in 2010. Im of course REALLY generalizing here to get my opinion across.
let me know what you think
